After
many years as a Clinical Certified Hypnotherapist, I
began to work with pregnant women and really enjoyed
it. I love working with expectant mothers because they
are so receptive to life and new experiences-and they
also have a powerful sense of a higher purpose.
I deeply believe that a natural birth is important to
the foundation of a healthy and strong being, so it
isn't surprising that I developed a mission to help
expectant mothers. My goal is to help women get back
in touch with their natural instincts and reconnect
with their inner strength, so their birthing experience
can be enriching, empowering, and peaceful, so that
their babies can growth as healthy as we want our society
to be. See "Safe
Baby Resolution", co-written by Star Newland
and Lou Janel Martin as Senate Concurrent Resolution
8 making its way through the Hawaii State Senate and
House.
I find that hypnosis training reframes what birth means
to women. They get a sense of their own power, and see
that who they are is so much more than what they may
have previously believed.
It gives women a wonderful chance to get back
to their inner wisdom and strength. It is a phenomenal
experience to teach a woman to take care of herself
from a deeper place, and give her the ability to go
back to that place of inner calm and wisdom any time
she likes. The beauty of childbirth hypnosis is about
finding that quiet place—that quiet strength—within
us.
I sometimes describe the process with the terms, “small
brain”, or the part of the mind that analyzes,
fears and panics; and “big brain”, which
is more in touch with innate wisdom, truth and inner
power. When an expectant mother’s “small
brain” creates fear and chaos, the real truth
of her power and natural abilities can get lost.
Hypnosis helps take the mind out of ‘small-brain’
(survival, panic, reaction) mode and re-directs it to
‘big brain’ (power, action, harmony) mode.
This re-directing technique works because the brain
can’t focus well on two things at once.
For one thing, baby growth within a much more
relaxed environment which helps brain development in
harmony with a peaceful state of mind/emotion responsible
later on for a fully sociable human being with higher
capacity for higher/loving thoughts (see intelligence
of the heart by Joe Pierce). Your baby shapes its brain
and lays the foundations for personality, emotional
temperament, and the powers of higher thought in your
womb. Often time mother report a very calm and happy
baby. For another hypnosis training helps the mother
trust the baby's role in birth. When you understand
and trust that the baby knows what he or she is doing,
then you don't have to focus so much on what to do next,
whether it be to relax during a contraction, move your
body differently to facilitate the positioning of your
baby, or pushing-you are partnering with your baby and
can just let the birth happen.
Another outcome of their Childbirth
Hypnosis Training is a higher Apgar score (measurement
of the baby's well being at the birth), and of course
a calm birth which leads to amazing bonding.
The time when we are in gestation is so critical—research
is only now showing us how important this time of our
lives really is (See Research, The
science of innate intelligence). In fact, some people
believe that the birth experience is a blueprint of
what happens with our lives. In any event, a more positive
and comfortable birth is a wonderful place to start
a new life. See (A Better
Start For Your Baby)
It’s amazing to see the transformation
from fear and anxiety to calm and confidence. Even women
who are unfamiliar with the process of hypnosis quickly
realize that there’s nothing unusual or strange
about it—it’s simply using the power of
the mind to improve the childbirth experience.
The hypnosis process puts women in touch with the part
of them that made the baby to begin with. As they discover
and dispel their fears, they can give birth to the baby the
same way it was conceived—by surrendering to the
moment and letting it happen. Some women don’t
have fears but want to have the empowering consciousness
that they can get from hypnosis training or they are
able to deal with some of their unconscious fears through
the training.
Also, too often women go into the hospital and lose
their sense of power and confidence. Sometimes just
being a patient can make you feel “sick”.
When a woman is going to have a baby, she needs to feel
as empowered and confident as possible. With hypnosis,
women can take their power back, regardless of the circumstances
of the birth.
Hypnosis training isn’t new—it’s been
around since the 1920s.
I occasionally encounter a woman whose mother used hypnosis
for her birth. But many women today are not familiar
with the technique.
I was born in France and am used to hypnosis being more
accepted in Europe than it is in the United States,
but I think that is changing rapidly. More American
women are starting to realize that there is an opportunity
here to greatly improve the childbirth experience.
I think women are starting to feel that there is a larger
experience to be had and they don’t want to miss
it because of fear or painkillers. They want to be fully
present for the joy of giving birth and they realize
they don’t just need it for themselves—their
child needs it. In fact, the world needs it.”
